HELMUT NEWTON.
FOTOGRAFIE. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes
From September 14, 2016 to January 22, 2017, the exhibition Helmut Newton. Fotografie. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes will be on public view for the first time in Genoa, at the Sottoporticato of Palazzo Ducale. The comprehensive show presents more than 200 images by Helmut Newton, one of the most important and renowned photographers of the 20th century.
The idea for the exhibition, curated by Matthias Harder and Denis Curti for the Palazzo Ducale, is the outcome of project initiated in 2011 by June Newton, widow of the photographer and president of the Helmut Newton Foundation. It unites images from Helmut Newton’s first three books, which were published between the late seventies and early eighties – reflected in the exhibition’s title and its organization into three sections. These three groundbreaking volumes, which Helmut Newton personally edited and designed, are fundamental to understanding his work as both an artistic visionary and a master craftsman of the photographic medium.
White Women
In 1976, Helmut Newton published his first monograph, White Women, which soon after its publication was recognized with the prestigious Kodak Photo Book Award. With this volume of 84 black-and-white and color photographs, Newton introduced radical nudity and eroticism to the world of fashion. His controversial images revolutionized fashion photography aesthetics, while both reflecting and commenting on the changing image of women in Western society. Newton’s contemporary vision finds resonance in art history, such as The Naked Maya and The Clothed Maya by Francisco Goya, which can both be seen at the Museum del Prado in Madrid.
Sleepless Nights
Sleepless Nights, published in 1978, continues the artist’s fascination with women, their bodies, and their clothes. Transcending the boundaries of convention, he explores fashion shots as a form of portraiture or even crime scene reportage. Models are depicted partially nude, clad in orthopedic corsets or leather saddles, and photographed in various locations outside of the studio. Newton’s carefully staged compositions, both sensual and provocative, suggest the use of fashion photography as a pretext for creating a new and highly personal genre. A kind of mini-retrospective in itself, this book comprises images Newton shot for various magazines, especially Vogue, and was instrumental in elevating him to an icon of fashion photography.
Big Nudes
The publication of Big Nudes in 1981 sealed Newton’s reputation as a key player in photography of the second half of the 20th century. Meanwhile, the large scale of his prints signaled his arrival in fine art galleries and museums around the world. For his series of full-length, black-and-white nude photographs, shot in the studio using a medium-format camera, Newton drew inspiration from German police posters of RAF terrorists.
Although his commissioned work was widely published to great acclaim, what was selected by magazine editors did not represent the full scope of this great artist’s vision. Helmut Newton’s lens had the ability to sound out a reality that transcended the elegance of the, allowing glimpses into another dimension. With its presentation of defining motifs from Helmut Newton’s artistic imagination, this comprehensive exhibition enables viewers to gain a deeper understanding of his oeuvre than ever before.
With kind support from the Region of Liguria, the Municipality of Genoa and Genoa Palazzo Ducale Foundation for Culture, the exhibition is organized by Civita Mostre in cooperation with the Helmut Newton Foundation.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication published by Marsilio.
