Interview with Dan Russell

Dan Russell
United Kingdom

A fascination with industry, large-scale machinery and the environments in which they can be found form the basis for several narratives within his work, which has often been underpinned by an awareness of ecological concerns and the adverse effects that these processes are having  on the environment and to animal life.

-When did you start dedicating yourself to the world of contemporary jewellery?
It was basically when I started studying my BA at The University for the Creative Arts – Rochester, In 2014, prior to that I made Club wear & Accessories for Cyber/Goth/Industrial music scene here in the UK. I started a course in Contemporary Jewellery as a way of learning new skills that I could develop further in my own work. But as the course progressed I found a real affinity to the work I was creating and as I discovered more about the world of Contemporary Jewellery, the more I wanted to be a part of it.

-What do you take inspiration from when you start creating a new collection?
My work is usually inspired by my surroundings, mostly industry and machinery, critically focussing on the destruction around me rather than the beauty that I see. I often use found objects in my work and sometimes they can help to drive the narrative.

-What kind of work or material do you prefer?
I love to work primarily with wood, often supported with the use of metal for mechanisms and connections, and quite often with found objects.

-Three words with which you would describe the Artistar Jewels project.
Prestigious, Inclusive, Innovative.

-What do you think of the jewels that were on show this year?
There were such an amazing variety of works from right across the globe. It felt like a great representation of the world of contemporary jewellery today.

-Have you been fascinated by any particular creation?
Stanislav Drokin’s Hybrid Casting # 2 Carmenere Ring, was truly mesmerising to behold. It was very clear that he was the deserved winner of the overall contest. It was absolutely stunning, and a joy to hear him talk about its creation as well.

-How would you define the atmosphere created on the 22nd and 23rd February nights of Artistar Jewels 2018?
I must admit that on entering the Palazzo dei Giureconsulti on the first night, I felt very out of my depth with just how grand a location it was, but once I ascended the stairs and entered the event all the nerves disappeared as I was warmly welcomed inside. The nights were very well organised and I had a great time meeting and talking to some amazingly talented people, there was a very positive vibe and everyone there could celebrate their accomplishments.

-Would you recommend to other artists to take part in Artistar Jewels?
Yes, definitely. I think that given the opportunity, everyone should take part if they can. It truly has been an amazing experience.
