Studentessa e poi oggetto di studio alla Curtin University, la designer ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca all’Università Western Australia. Con opere presso la National Gallery d’Australia, il Schmuckmuseum, il Victoria & Albert National Art Museum, le Gallerie d’Arte di West e South Australia, il Queen Victoria Museum & Gallery, l’artista lavora nel suo studio di Perth.
"Il mio lavoro è variato notevolmente nel corso degli anni, ma alla base ci sono sempre i miei interessi principali; colore, geometria e natura. Essi sono gli elementi su cui si fonda la mia produzione che riflette la luce e la terra dell'Australia Occidentale. La cinetica è un altro aspetto che si riscontra osservando le miei creazioni. Mi piace utilizzare le pietre preziose per tradurre i dipinti del pittore austriaco Gustav Klimt in gioielli da indossare" afferma Dorothy. Il lavoro più recente della designer è un vero e proprio omaggio alla madre terra, l'artista prende i wildflowers dell’Australia occidentale come ispirazione. Il metallo prezioso che ama utilizzare è l’oro, combinato a cavi d'acciaio o di maglia, proprio come suo nonno proprietario di una miniera di questo importante materiale. Molti dei recenti gioielli sono basati sulla sui fiori della sua terra dipinti a mano. Tuttavia, essi non sono la riproduzione fedele della realtà, ma sono richiami al colore, alla forma e all’abitudine dei particolarissimi wildflowers.
La dottoressa Erickson è anche un’importante scrittrice e critica d'arte. E' autrice di Art and Design in Western Australia: Perth Technical College 1900-2000 pubblicato nel 2000, A Joy Forever: The Story of Kings Park pubblicato nel 2009, Gold and Silversmithing in Western Australia: A History pubblicata nel 2010 e Inspired by Light and Land: Designers and Makers in Western Australia 1829-1969 che è stato pubblicato nel 2014.
Dorothy Erickson is a jeweller based in Western Australia who has exhibited internationally since 1980. Daughter of a prominent naturalist, wildflower painter and historian she trained at Curtin University in Western Australia taking degrees in both Art and Design and then a Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Western Australia. She has exhibited worldwide in prestigious exhibitions and her work is in major collections including the Schmuckmuseum in Pforzheim, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Art Museum of Malta and Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, USA. She has won awards for both jewellery and writing. She will hold her 40th solo exhibition in September.
She says: “My work has varied considerably over the years but enduring interests are colour, geometry and nature. I have bodies of work which reflect the light and land of Western Australia, others where the focus has been on kinetics in jewellery and then there was a focus on precious gemstones to translate the paintings of Austrian Gustav Klimt into jewels to wear.” Her newest work, a tribute to her mother, the artist and author Dr Rica Erickson takes Western Australian wildflowers as their inspiration. As her grandfather had a goldmine she is also inspired by the precious metal and likes to use it in her work, often combined with steel cable or mesh. Many of the recent jewels are based on her mother’s wildflower paintings. However they are not literal translations instead they are evocations of the colour, form or habit of Australia’s unique wildflowers.
Dr Erickson is also a significant writer and art critic. She is the author of Art and Design in Western Australia: Perth Technical College 1900-2000 published in 2000, A Joy Forever: The Story of Kings Park published in 2009, Gold and Silversmithing in Western Australia: A History published in 2010 and Inspired by Light and Land: Designers and Makers in Western Australia 1829-1969 which was published in 2014.
