What is the name of your brand and what's the meaning behind it?
Anna Nava Handcrafted Jewelry. “Nava” is my maiden family name. Using it in my brand name is my way of honoring my parents, my siblings and the rest of my very large Mexican family. I also handcraft all of the jewelry I design—from beginning to end.
Where do you take inspiration from when you start creating a new collection?
Right now, I am inspired by lines and silhouettes and overall ‘vibes’ found in clothing. Mostly, the classics. My eye is often drawn to classic necklines and the different ways that they accentuate a woman’s face, neck, etc. Shirt sleeve cuffs with crisp, strong edges, delicate lines with graceful movement, modern, minimal shapes… I love statements, details, uniqueness and a touch of something personal.
What kind of work or material or technique do you prefer to use?
Metals, silver, bronze and a little bit of gold, are my preferred materials but I also use gemstones.
I tend to use classic metalsmithing techniques with a bit of problem-solving solutions that I stumble upon as I am trying to realize an unconventional design that I have my heart set on. It doesn’t always work, but I truly believe in pushing myself to grow in my skills, my artistry and on a personal level, too. Honestly, It isn’t always the most comfortable thing because my process involves many failures, some successes and lots of learning. Still, I find myself doing it anyway. I love it.
Three words with which you would describe the Artistar Jewels project.
Exciting, expanding, inspirational
Have you been fascinated by any particular creation you saw in the Artistar jewels 2019 edition?
Yes, Denis Sozin’s Glasses Necklace is intricate, so colorful, so fascinating with all of the enamel details, and SO original! I adore it.
What were the opportunities that most pushed you to participate in the event?
The Artistar event provides so many opportunities to meet both fellow jewelry artists and influential people in the jewelry industry. These people have also been approachable and very encouraging to all of the exhibiting artists. I’ve always enjoyed meeting all types interesting people to exchange stories, experiences and just make connections. Oh, and I’m addicted to international travel.
What do you think about the upcoming Milano Jewelry Week? Do you think Milano needed it?
Yes, definitely! I think it’s wonderful to have a week dedicated to jewelry. There are SO many talented artists who create jewels that reflect their unique view of the world. I can hardly wait to see their creations and hear their stories!
