- When did you start dedicating yourself to the world of contemporary jewelry?
My interest in contemporary jewellery evolved from an art practice.
It happened just couple of years ago, quite late in my career. For many years I was working as an art director and graphic designer for big corporations. During that time I was frequently missing physical contact with materials and tools. Whenever possible, I would work on my art pieces. In a way, jewellery became an extension of the sculptural forms I was working on in wood and stone.
- What kind of work or material do you prefer?
During my frequent travels I collect interesting and unique materials, they quite often become an inspiration to a piece or bring an idea to a collection. On a side of precious stones and metals, my preferred materials are all natural: wood, rocks, sometimes ceramic and fabric. In my creative process it's important to work on a piece from start to finish. While I learn more of the gold-smithing techniques, lapidary and stone setting, I'm slowly introducing them in my work. Those hands-on experiments lead to finding new shapes and meanings in my designs.
- What are your points of reference in the world of contemporary jewellry and art?
Personally I'm interested with artists and performers who truly live (or lived) their life through art. I respect the old masters for their rigorous work ethics. Today, Marina Abramovic work comes frequently to my mind. Also, worth mentioning, are texts by Marcel Duchamp, which left quite an impression on me and probably influence the most my perception of the contemporary art. Without him our blossoming contemporary jewellery scene would not be possible. I thank him for opening the doors to brave experimentation in art.
- How would you define the atmosphere created on the 22nd and 23rd February nights of Artistar Jewels 2018?
- It was absolutely lovely event! The Artistar team give a five star performance. It was also great to meet in person some of the artists whose work I've been recently admiring and to have a chat with fellow designers. Not to forget how joyful it was to visit the Milan during the Fashion Week. I think its an awesome event to participate, worth recommending to anyone interested in world of fashion and jewellery!
