Interviewing Michelle Lung

London born and based contemporary jewellery artist Michelle Lung was awarded the Annoushka Graduate award for her BA Jewellery Design graduate collection at Central Saint Martins. Her pieces explore the untouchability of our digital data whilst questioning traditional ideas of preciousness, value and materiality within jewellery.

- What is the name of your brand and what's the meaning behind it?
Michelle Lung, it just seems the simplest and clearest thing to just stamp my name over the pieces I create.

- Where do you take inspiration from when you start creating a new collection?
I take inspiration from anything and everything; my surroundings, galleries, exhibitions. The most fun is when it comes from somewhere you least expect. I think the base of a collection always starts with a strong concept and from that ideas can develop from anything I observe that may trigger a eureka moment.

- What kind of work or material or technique do you prefer to use?
I don’t like to limit myself material-wise, but i definitely prefer to use or reuse non-precious materials. I find I just have a more relaxed and playful attitude when creating with non-precious materials and can be more experimental with the techniques.

- Three words with which you would describe the Artistar Jewels project.
Exciting, inspiring, variety

- Have you been fascinated by any particular creation you saw in the Artistar jewels 2019 edition?
I particularly loved Sowon Joo’s intricately weaved wire pieces. They just looked so fine and delicate, very opposite to the sort of thing i make. You can’t help but admire how much time must have gone into the repetitive motion of making the pieces.

- What were the opportunities that most pushed you to participate in the event?
The event was just a perfect opportunity to show my work to a wider audience and find out what sort of response i got from the public, fellow artists and gallery curators and organisers too. It was a fantastic time to get to meet fellow talented artists in the contemporary jewellery community. In fact the most valuable thing from the event was getting to share ideas, opinions and tips and tricks with the fellow jewellers and meet so many great people in general

- What do you think about the upcoming Milano Jewelry Week? Do you think Milano needed it?
I think it’s great contemporary jewellery finally gets its own spotlight and a week for itself. Its about time and hopefully its a catalyst for jewellery to be represented more on its own in the art world beyond just a tag along to fashion.
